Security Officer

Security Officer — Memphis Art Museum

$18.50/hour  ·  Full-time  ·  Downtown Riverfront (transitioning from Overton Park)

You notice things other people miss. Now do it somewhere that matters.

Memphis Art Museum — opening on the downtown riverfront in December 2026 — is building its security team now. We're looking for Security Officers who can hold two things at once: a genuine welcome for every visitor who walks through our doors, and a sharp eye that never really clocks out.

This role is responsible for protecting our visitors, staff, artwork, property, and parking garage. You'll conduct regular interior and exterior patrols and also be assigned to our Security Operations Center, monitoring alarm, CCTV, and access control systems alongside our Console Operators. The job calls for strong situational awareness, clear communication, and steady adherence to security and emergency response procedures — all while maintaining a welcoming, professional presence for our guests.

A note on where you'll work

In the months leading up to opening, our collection will begin moving into the new riverfront building while our current Overton Park location remains open to the public. During this transition, Security Officers will work across both sites as needed. Once the new location opens in December, your work will center there.

What you'll do

  • Patrol galleries, lobby, mezzanine, courtyard, roof terrace, entrances, parking garage, and exterior areas to ensure safety and security
  • Observe and report safety hazards, unauthorized access, damage, or suspicious activity
  • Protect artwork and exhibits from damage, theft, or vandalism
  • Ensure doors, gates, and protected areas are properly secured
  • Monitor conditions that could impact collections, including water leaks, temperature concerns, and smoke or fire indicators
  • Work in the Security Operations Center monitoring CCTV, fire alarm, and access control systems, and checking in/out employees, vendors, and contractors
  • Greet visitors and provide directions or assistance as needed
  • Enforce museum policies, state and federal laws, and safety regulations
  • Respond promptly to medical incidents, fire alarms, or security threats, and coordinate with police, fire, and EMS as necessary
  • Write detailed incident and daily activity reports
  • Assist with crowd control during special events and conduct bag checks or screenings as required

What you'll need

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ability to pass a background investigation and obtain Tennessee unarmed security officer certification
  • Comfortable on your feet for extended periods; able to climb stairs and navigate a large building
  • Available for evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Reliable transportation between sites during the transition period
  • Security, law enforcement, military, or customer service background is a plus — not a requirement
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification a plus — or willingness to become certified

Reports to the Director of Security.
