In specific parts of Mexico, the Day of the Dead holiday season is signaled by the autumn arrival of the mariposa -- monarch butterflies -- which are believed to usher in the spirits of the departed. Every fall, using environmental cues, the monarchs know when it is time to leave their summer breeding grounds in the United States and head south for the winter. Monarchs from east of the Rocky Mountains will travel up to an astonishing 3,000 miles to reach their winter home in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Michoacan, Mexico where they roost, or rest, from October to March each year.

Decorate a Mariposa:

1. Cut out and color your butterflies

2. Dedicate your butterfly to a loved one who has passed away by writing their name on the line.

3. Bring your mariposa to the museum to hang in the education gallery.

4. Use tape to attach your mariposa to its winter home in the fir tree forests of the Sierra Madre Mountains.
