Café Conversations is back, virtually, for another year of stimulating and intimate conversations with the best thinkers in Memphis!

For this event Dr. Rebecca M. Howard, Visiting Assistant Professor, Early Modern Art History at the University of Memphis, will discuss her research on Italian Renaissance portraiture, incorporating several works in your collection at the Brooks. Together, we’ll learn about some of her new findings and theories that connect Renaissance portraiture to period studies of the functions of the memory, set to be published in her forthcoming book, Portraiture and Mnemonics in Renaissance Italy (under contract with Amsterdam University Press). The talk will end with a brief introduction to the late Renaissance painter Sofonisba Anguissola, whose small self-portrait and portrait of her sister are stars in the current remix of the collection at the Brooks, Power and Absence: Women in Europe, 1500-1680. Dr. Howard will invite University of Memphis Art History graduate student and Brooks Museum intern, Chandler Tait, to share some of her recent research and theories on these two portraits.
