Explore the Brooks Museum as a family! We welcome children of all ages and their caregivers to engage with the visual arts and have fun together. Let us help you create an exciting day of fun at the Brooks.
Inside Art is Tennessee’s only hands-on family art gallery dedicated to visual literacy. Families will explore a climbing structure, walk into a larger-than-life painting and create sculptures made of found objects, all developed to help improve their visual literacy. Each of the seven specially-crafted activities is designed to give children the skills and confidence to become confident art explorers.
Community Days at the Brooks
For a fun, free family activity, come to the Brooks! Community Days allow families and friends to experience the museum in a fun, engaging environment. These free events feature art-making activities, events like storytelling in the galleries, musical and dance performances, and family-oriented gallery guides, all designed to engage families with current exhibitions.
Free interactive family guides, which include activities for families to complete both in the gallery and later at home, are created in conjunction with special exhibitions as well as for the permanent collection. Inside these guides families will find questions for guided looking, information on artists and artwork, and suggestions for further exploration. Guides are available at the Admissions desk and in the special exhibition galleries. Click here to see our visitor tips for families.
An audio tour can be your ticket to more information about the extraordinary variety of art that you can find at the Brooks Museum. They’re a great tool for families to share their experience in the galleries at the Brooks. A special kids’ tour of the museum’s permanent collection features art from a wide range of artistic periods and cultures and encourages close looking and creative thinking.
Audio tours can be accessed on the Brooks’s app for iPhone and Android smartphones, or on an iPod Touch that can be checked out from the Visitor Services staff.
Dia de los Muertos
Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a special holiday celebrated annually in Mexico and parts of the United States honoring deceased loved ones. In this biennial event, families are invited to honor ancestors and celebrate the cycle of life and death through gallery talks, films, hands-on art activities, music, dance, and theatrical performances, and place an offering on our communal altar. Admission is free.
