Explore Dalí: Illustrating the Surreal through
hands-on art making activities, artist demonstrations, and children's short
surrealist films. The museum galleries will be open and free. Invite your friends and bring the whole family to learn about
surrealism at the museum!
of Art students stage an illustration-takeover of the museum! Throughout the galleries, MCA students will engage you in live
demonstrations of the tricks, tools, and techniques used in various styles of
of Memphis students will lead four art activities, all inspired by work
on view in Dalí: Illustrating the Surreal: Wire
sculptures of crazy caterpillars (Down the Rabbit Hole, from Alice
in Wonderland, 1969); Model Magic "ugly ducklings" (The
Ugly Duckling from Hans Christian Andersen Tales, 1966);
and jumbo recipe card collages–jot down your favorite surrealist dish
from Dalí's The Dinners of Gala or concoct your own! Materials will be on hand to make your own Cheshire Cat "grin" and/or fake mustache (à la Dalí), and
we strongly encourage both to be worn by all!
