The directorial debut of the son of two icons of the French new wave movement, Agnes Varda and Jacques Demy, Mathieu Demy’s Americano both reinterprets his parent’s work and examines America’s cultural influence on the world – itself a popular topic for the French new wave. The younger Demy also stars in Americano as Martin, a Parisian who is suddenly called to Los Angeles to deal with inheritance formalities following his mother’s death. With Geraldine (daughter of Charlie) Chaplin and Chiara (daughter of Marcello) Mastroianni in supporting roles, this drama echoes – and projects – psychological elements from his progenitors’ works, specifically Varda’s Documenteur and the elder Demy’s Lola.
