Talk: Thinking Inside the Box: American Sculpture of the 1960s

Rhodes College Professor David McCarthy who will discuss Marisol in relation to
several sculptors of her generation by noting and investigating the prevalence
of the box as a form and idea in American sculpture of the 1960s. These artists
attempted to negotiate both the ongoing tradition of modernist innovation and
the rise of the United States to a position of economic and military power.
David McCarthy is a former Smithsonian Senior fellow, author of several
books and articles on American art of the twentieth century, and is currently
completing a study of antiwar art since the 1930s.
