Pop Artists on Paper

03/29/2014 - 08/17/2014

Entry Level, American Art, 20th Century Gallery map

Curated by Marina Pacini, Chief Curator and Curator of American, Modern, and Contemporary Art

Organized in conjunction with the upcoming Marisol: Sculptures and Works on Paper (June 14 – September 7), this exhibition celebrates the dramatic upsurge of printmaking in the sixties and seventies. Silkscreens and lithographs offered a less expensive alternative for the growing number of collectors who wanted to own original works of art. Artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, and Peter Phillips celebrated American popular culture in their prints inspired by comic books, cars, and girls. That some of these images exploited women’s sexuality would soon become a major topic with the rise of the feminist movement.
