During the 1930s Luigi Lucioni (American, b. Italy 1900-1988) emerged as one of the country’s most masterful landscape etchers. His works, almost always combining leafy trees, mountain vistas, and rustic barns, are immediately recognizable for their crisp, careful linearity and polished realism. Lucioni’s fascination with minute detail—whether leaves, weathered boards, or billowing clouds—lend his work a flat, decorative quality. At the same time however, his etchings are beautiful and evocative mementos of the summers he spent in the mountains of Vermont.
