Peter Fischli and David Weiss, among the most renowned contemporary Swiss artists, began collaborating in 1979. Their humorous video, The Way Things Go, was shot in a warehouse over a period of three days. Using a variety of household objects—shoes, tea kettles, tires, and ladders, among other things—they set off a self-destructing chain reaction involving chemistry and gravity. The results are riveting and surprising.
