Angels and/or Tomboys or Both or Neither: Girlhood in the 21st-Century

[caption id="attachment_4932" align="alignnone" width="761"] It's called a 'knit bomb'.[/caption] A group known as the Memphis Knit Mafia rallied last month to weave a 21st-Century response to the Brooks’  Angels & Tomboys  exhibition around the walkways, architectural elements, and pedestals punctuating the Museum’s outdoor plaza. From MKM’s call to action, fellow Memphian knitters came forth; trafficking tote bag after tote bag chock-a-block vibrant swatches of knit work... Read More

New in Genre

Before Dub Step, there was Surrealism. Old School Hip Hop, appearing way after the French New Wave (and the Southern Gothic novel), was preceded by German Expressionism. And then there was the crime novel and slapstick comedy. Don't worry, this is not to forge a trajectory; only to exhibit the all-encompassing umbrella of genre . From the general to the painstakingly specific, we have genre. Now, if you were say the above list is actually composed of subgenres , you would be right. But... Read More

Zahra Nazari: Intern Extraordinaire

[caption id="attachment_4556" align="aligncenter" width="300"] 05#18 Acrylic on Canvas 53x94.5 2012[/caption] My Brooks internship began when I was an international graduate student from Iran attending the Memphis College of Art in painting. Dia de los Muertos: Recap

On Saturday, October 27th, the Memphis Brooks Museum was open, and very much alive, to a day of festivities spirited in the Mexican tradition of celebrating the dead. The families of Memphis' Latino community and art enthusiasts alike filled the Brooks, honoring Dia de los Muertos with face painting in the Renaissance galleries, skeletons reanimated through sculpture on the lower level, and outside on the terrace - several stunning performances from local Latinos preserving their heritage... The End of an Era: Kathleen's Going Away Party

Karleen Gardner is Director of Education at the Brooks, and just received a new job in Minnesota. While we are all very proud and excited for her, she will be greatly missed. To send her off, we celebrated at Earnestine and Hazel’s with soul burgers, cupcakes  and many great memories. It is ironic that we just posted about Greely Myatt’s cake sculptures because guess what Karleen was given for her parting gift? Check out her Greely Myatt slice from the Brooks! [caption... [caption id="attachment_4461" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Piece of Cake, 2008 (Credit: PDX/dessertgirl)[/caption] While perusing one of my favorite websites for dinner (really, dessert) ideas, , I came across this amazing article about a well-known Memphis artist and Brooks favorite, Greely Myatt . Now, admittedly I found this article because I really wanted to make cake for dinner, but alas was distracted by the mere visual of the delectable dessert. ... Read More

Exhibitions Intern Jody Stokes-Casey Talks School, Text and Themes at the Brooks

For the next few weeks, I will have the pleasure of working in some incredible galleries at the Brooks museum. I am an art history graduate student at the University of Memphis and am enrolled in a museum studies certification program through the university. As part of a course, I have been assigned to work with a museum in the creation of a product that will benefit not only my learning, but also the institution for which the product is created. I knew from the early stages of the assignment... Read More
