import from the legendary Studio Ghibli, home of Spirited Away and My
Neighbor Totoro, is an inspired coming-of-age story set in circa 1960s
Yokahama. A pure, wistful and nuanced evocation of young love, From Up on
Poppy Hill uses a rich palette and painterly details of glistening harbors,
sun-drenched gardens and bustling cityscapes to tell this tale of two students
who join forces to save their high school’s ramshackle clubhouse from
demolition and, in the process, develop a budding romance. This 2012 winner of
the Japan Academy Prize for Animation has been re-dubbed for American
audiences, with voices by Aubrey Plaza, Gillian Anderson, Chris Noth, Christina
Hendricks, and more.
From Up on Poppy Hill is presented in conjunction with
Animefest, a community exhibition conceived, marketed, and curated by
the Brooks Teen Advisory Committee, a group of high school aged students from
public, private, and home schools that meet once a month to test ideas and
provide feedback that will shape the future of teen programming at the Brooks. Animefest
is on view in the Brooks’ Education Studio May 11 – June 23, 2013.
