Dr. Sherry C.M. Lindquist, Dorothy Kayser Hohenberg Chair of Excellence in Art History at the University of Memphis (2017-2019), will discuss how the visual vocabulary of monstrosity operates to alienate and demonize cultural outsiders in medieval art.
Focusing on illuminated manuscripts, she will both analyze ways in which Africans, Jews, Muslims, women, the physically and mentally impaired, and the poor were “monsterized,” and address the difficult legacy of such imagery.
Free. No reservations required.
