William-Adolphe Bouguereau was closely associated with prestigious Académie Julian in Paris, where, over several decades, he taught painting and drawing to thousands of students. After his first wife died, Bouguereau married one of his pupils, Elizabeth Jane Gardner, an American painter who adopted the style and subject matter of her famous teacher. Join us for this enlightening talk by Jane R. Becker, Collections Management Associate at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and curator of the exhibition Overcoming All Obstacles: The Women of the Académie Julian.
